This replica of the first Loch Broom church, built in 1787 on land donated by Belfast-native, James McCabe, who arrived in Loch Broom in 1767, was opened on July 20, 1973 with ceremonies that recalled the early days of the original. As the Rev. James MacGregor had arrived by canoe, so did the Moderator of the Assembly of the Church of Scotland, who preached the first sermon in the replica church. |

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
10 Prince St, Pictou > |
ACC |
WR |
| |
Built in 1848, this wooden church is distinguished by details that bring to mind European stone architecture, such as the toothed edge of the tower roofline and the heavily decorated ‘steeples’ at the corners of the roof and the tower. The entrance is especially lovely with an elongated ogee arch. This church stands on the location of the first church built in the Town of Pictou. One of its founders was Thomas McCulloch, the founder of Pictou Academy and first president of Dalhousie University. The main ornamental work is found on the pews and on the pulpit.

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian began as the Church of Scotland in 1822. The wooden church was replaced by a brick and stone structure in 1866; that building was destroyed by fire in 1893 and the present church was opened in 1896. A beautiful interior, high pulpit and close to perfect acoustics are hallmarks of this impressive church.

Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church opened in 1866 and the present-day church took almost a year and a half to build. The brick Gothic Revival church was extensively renovated inside and out during 1991 and 1992. Inside, behind the altar is an iron cross of 18th century French origin. It was found in the local area and is believed to have been used by French pioneers here before New England settlers arrived. |
