NORTHWEST BAPTIST CHURCH

This church at Northwest Range was established in 1809 and met in homes until the building was built in 1818-20. It is one of the oldest Baptist churches in the country.

UNITED BAPTIST CHURCH

Doors Open: Saturday 11am-3pm, Sunday 10am-2pm

Most people recognize the ‘three churches’ of Mahone Bay, but there are more than the three. Dedicated volunteers maintain this church which is an excellent example of Gothic Revival construction.

ST JAMES’ ANGLICAN CHURCH

The first church was completed in 1833 and enlarged several times.  The current church designed in the 1880’s by William Critchlow Harris, brother of the rector, was built mainly by volunteers.

ST JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

St John’s Lutheran congregation was fully organized in 1864 and the decision made in 1866 to erect a church. It is thought that the first Christmas tree illuminated in a church in Nova Scotia was here in 1876.

SUGGESTED ROUTE  - after visiting Northwest Baptist just off Hwy 324 proceed inland from Exit 11 to Cornwall and then Newburne. Continue to Maplewood and turn left to Barss Corner and then to New Germany, From there Hwy 10 will take you to the New West Pine. A detour from Hwy 10 up the Penney Rd will take you to Mt Calvary. You can return by the same route to Hwy 10 which will take you past the beautiful Wentzell’s Lake or follow the Silver Rd back to Hwy 10 and on to Bridgewater.

NEW CORNWALL BAPTIST CHURCH

In 1878 our church property was purchased for 8 dollars. The decision to build the church was made on June 30, 1883 at a meeting at the Lower Cornwall school. The church stands proudly on a knoll in the middle of the three Cornwall communities.

ST MARK’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

Built in the 1860’s – pre-Confederation, as a place of worship for Lutherans, Anglicans and Presbyterians. The preached word was given special emphasis – note the height of the pulpit!

CHURCH OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

First services in this church, designed by W. Charles Harris, were held in 1920, and consecrated 90 years ago on August 11, 1929. This congregation has held joint services with the neighbouring Lutheran congregation monthly for almost 5o years.

BARSS CORNER BAPTIST CHURCH

Early settlers kept good records here from 1838. Fourteen were baptized and formed the New Germany United Baptist Church with a meeting house at Indian Brook. The current church was begun in 1860. We have lots of books and pictures to share and will have a genealogist present both days!

EPWORTH UNITED CHURCH

Epworth United had its beginning when in 1838-1820 families who were Quakers and Methodists moved to the area from the Nictaux and Mount Hanley area. They first met in Watford and later joined with Presbyterians and met in New Germany. From there Epworth was built and became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925.

NEW WEST PINE UNTIED CHURCH

In 1876, a Presbyterian Church was built and in 1916 moved 1 ½ km to the present location, powered by horses and oxen and crossing a road, railroad and river. Ask how we got the new name New West Pine.

ST JOSEPH'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Inside the Tobin family home in 1862 a wedding officially initiated the Catholic faith in Bridgewater. By 1889 there were twelve families and a new church building. With yet more growth in the Catholic community, an expansion, doubling it's capacity, occurred in 1984. Today the parishioners of St Joseph's form the most significant Catholic community on the South Shore, as they form disciples of Jesus Christ

Suggested Route –From Bridgewater take Hwy 331 along the LaHave River and Cross on the LaHave River Ferry and then follow Hwy 332 through Riverport to Rose Bay and then to Lunenburg. Alternatively go directly to Mahone Bay or Lunenburg

ST PETER'S CHURCH

ST JAMES' CHURCH

LaHave was one of the very earliest European settlements in North America, and for a short period in the early seventeenth century, the capital of New France. This large church, with a meeting room attached, was built at a period of great prosperity of this community, both through fishing and as a major trading port with the Eastern United States and the Caribbean. It is now a very lively tourist spot on an August weekend

ST JOHN'S CHURCH

Open Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No washroom or wheelchair access.

This church was erected in 1907. For six decades prior to that, three congregations, Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian, had all worshipped in a Union Church. After they built separate churches, this shared building was moved to West LaHave, where it served as St Peter's Church Hall. It was sold in 2013 to be converted into a residence

CROSS the LAHAVE RIVER by Ferry, leaves the west side at LaHave on the hour and half-hour. Proceed along Hwy 332 to Lunenburg passing the Rose Bay churches

ST MATTHEW'S LUTHERAN CHURCH

The present-day church, with a seating capacity of 350, was built by Boehner Brothers of West LaHave, at a cost of $5700. St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church was declared a Heritage Property by the Municipality of Lunenburg in 1998

ST NORBERT'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

In 1830 two German Catholic families moved to the area setting up a small chapel in their home. With a growing community of Catholics, work began on a Church in 1839. Some decades later the church was closed but reopened in the 1930's and even expanded in 1980 to it present edifice. Today many active families frequent the church and participate in the mission of Jesus Christ
